Print routing: Marina Theatre (VID 6197)

Venue ID 6197. Account name "Marna Theatre Trading" (spelled that way in the record).

Snapshot taken 2026-09-12 21:04 UTC. Revision 3.

Last printer edit at this venue: 2026-09-03 11:42 UTC, on "Kiosk - Collection (Circle)".

Warehouse replica current to 2026-09-10 00:11 UTC for printer tables.

This file is a snapshot. Printer settings, slot categories and menu links can change at

any time. If the config was edited after the date above, this file is wrong. Re-read

before you rely on it for a change.

Six accounts contain the word "Marina". Only VID 6197 has printers and takes money.

The others (6124, 6384, 6771, 7204, 7218) are demo or incomplete shells. If a caller

gives you a different Marina VID, check before you act.

0. What this file cannot see

This file covers cloud printers only. It does not and cannot cover local printers.

Many venues also run printers connected to the till by network cable, by USB, or in a

small number of cases by Bluetooth. Those are configured on the iPad itself, under Local

Printers, and they do not appear in any central record. Nothing in this file, and nothing

any agent can query, will show you that a venue has one.

**So the routing described below is complete for cloud printers and may be incomplete for

the venue.** If a caller describes a printer that does not match anything here, do not

conclude the record is wrong. Ask whether the printer is plugged into the till. This is

true of every venue, not just this one.

A second gap follows from the first: a local printer can never serve a prep station. The

iPad's local printer type list holds eight types and Prep Station is not one of them. If a

venue wants prep station routing, that printer has to be a cloud printer.

1. How Dines decides what prints (general, applies to every venue)

This section describes the automatic print at the moment an order is accepted. Manual

printing is different and is covered at the end of this section.

An order does not go to "the printers". It goes to a list that Dines builds by removing

printers, one test at a time. A printer must survive every test. The order of the tests

matters, because an early test can silence a printer that is correctly set up later on.

The tests run in this sequence:

#

Test

What it removes

1

Pool

Start with the printers linked to the slot category of the slot the order came from. If that category links no printers, fall back to every active printer at the venue.

2

Active

Remove printers switched off. Applied inside the pool from step 1.

3

Print On Accept

Remove printers whose setting does not match the order flow (till order or mobile order).

4

Only Print when Order has Courses

Remove printers carrying this setting when the order has no course on it.

5

Delivery

Remove Delivery Ticket printers on an order that is not a delivery.

6

Item type

Remove All Items, Bar / Drinks Only, Food Only, Other Items Only and Kitchen Ticket printers when the order holds none of their items.

7

Prep Station

Last of all, remove a Prep Station printer when the order holds no item linked to its station.

Two consequences that cause most confusion:

  • A Prep Station printer can be silenced before its links are ever read. Steps 1 to 4

can drop it. Steps 5 and 6 cannot. So a perfect set of prep station links is not enough

on its own.

  • **A slot category with no linked printers is not "no printing". It is "print

everywhere".** The fallback at step 1 sends the order to every active printer at the

venue.

Manual printing bypasses all of this

Everything above governs the automatic print only. A member of staff can open any order

and print it to any printer profile by hand, from anywhere in the venue, whatever that

printer's type or location. The seven tests do not apply.

This matters on a support call in both directions. A printer that never fires

automatically can still be printed to by hand, so "it does print sometimes" does not prove

the automatic routing is working. And a ticket appearing on an unexpected printer may be a

member of staff choosing it, not a routing fault.

The printer types

Nine types. The stored value is given because raw data will show the number, not the

label. This mapping was read off the Cloud Printer Type dropdown on the dashboard on

2026-09-12 and is exact.

Stored

Label on screen

What it puts on the ticket

0

Front of House

Every item on the order, including notes and special requests. Drops a zero-price item flagged to hide at zero value. This is the default for a new printer.

1

Kitchen Ticket

Only items with Kitchen Mode Item switched on. Does not read item type.

2

Bar / Drinks Only

Only items typed Drink.

3

Delivery Ticket

Delivery orders only.

4

All Items

Every item on the order. Ignores item type.

5

Front of House (Excl. Notes)

As Front of House, without notes and special requests.

6

Other Items Only

Only items typed Other.

7

Food Only

Only items typed Food.

8

Prep Station

Only items named by the chosen prep station, through its four link types: menu items, menu categories, modifier sets, and modifiers. Ignores item type. Absent from the dropdown until the venue has at least one prep station.

Four values, stored as: 0 All, 1 EPOS Only, 2 Mobile Ordering Only, **3

None. A new printer starts at None**, and None means the printer never prints by

itself. It can still be printed to by hand.

2. What Marina Theatre actually has

Ten cloud printer records. Three real devices, plus one dummy. Several printer records

point at the same physical printer with different rules. This is normal and it is why the

list looks longer than the hardware.

All ten printers are active. All 23 slots belong to a slot category, so no order at this

venue hits the "print everywhere" fallback. Every slot category links at least one

printer.

In plain terms

  • Till sales at the Cafe, Bar and Kiosk print on that counter's own printer. Nothing

crosses between counters. What prints depends on whether the order carries a course.

See section 3.

  • Ice cream till sales print nothing automatically. That is deliberate. See trap 1.

  • Mobile orders to either foyer collection point print twice: hot drinks go to the

Cafe printer, everything else goes to the Kiosk collection printer for that foyer.

  • No cloud printer here reads item type. Every type in use is Front of House, All

Items or Prep Station, and none of the three reads it. Changing an item from Food to

Drink at this venue changes nothing about where it prints.

Ticket layout and other per-printer settings

Every one of the ten printers sits at the default for ticket layout: items Categorised

rather than Alphabetical, Order Number shown rather than Ticket Number or Both,

allergy block Above Order Details, notes block After Order Details, slot block

Below Items. Both internal-name flags are off on all ten.

**One printer differs from the rest in one respect: Bar Interval Orders opens the cash

drawer.** No other printer here does, including Bar - Receipts on the same physical

device. So the drawer opens on an interval order and not on an ordinary bar sale. That may

be deliberate. It is the only non-default setting at this venue and it is worth confirming

with the client rather than assuming either way.

The one prep station

"Hot Drinks Only" (description: "Prints Hot Drinks Only"). It links exactly one thing:

the Hot Drinks menu category. No individual items, no modifier sets, no modifiers.

Hot Drinks currently holds 20 active items: Black Americano, Cappuccino, Chai Latte, Decaf

Tea, Double Espresso, Earl Grey Tea, English Breakfast Tea, Flat White, Herbal Tea, Hot

Chocolate, Iced Americano, Iced Latte, Iced Mocha, Latte, Luxury Hot Chocolate, Mocha,

Single Espresso, Tea For One, White Americano, Xmas Hot Chocolate.

Because the link is to the category and not to the items, adding an item to Hot Drinks

puts it on the Cafe prep printer automatically. Moving an item out of Hot Drinks removes

it. Nobody has to touch the prep station to change what it prints.

3. Coursing at this venue. Read this before you touch a course setting

This is working as designed. Do not "fix" it.

Coursing is switched on. One course is defined: Interval Orders. Four printers are set

to Orders with Courses Only (the other value on that control is Always Print):

  • Cafe - Receipts

  • Bar - Receipts

  • Kiosk - Receipts

  • Kiosk - Prep Tickets

Why a theatre does this

A customer orders two beers for now and two gin and tonics for the interval. The server

pours the beers and hands them over immediately. Nobody needs a ticket for those. The two

gin and tonics go on the Interval Orders course, and the ticket that prints is the

server's reminder to make them an hour later.

So these printers are meant to stay quiet on an ordinary sale and to fire only when there

is something to remember for later. **A silent printer on a normal walk-up order is the

correct outcome, not a fault.**

The server sets the course, at the till, per order

No menu item at this venue carries a default course, and that is normal. Courses at a

theatre are decided when the order is taken, not baked into the menu. The server long-

presses the basket line and assigns it to Interval Orders.

Any item can be coursed this way, drinks included. That is the whole point of the pattern.

The one place item type does interact with courses

A menu item can carry a default course, so that it always lands on that course when

added. On the item edit form, changing Item Type to anything other than Food clears

that default Course field. It is a form behaviour on the item screen and it affects the

item's default only.

It has no effect at Marina, because no item here carries a default course. It matters at

venues that do use item defaults, such as Takusan Caterham. **If a caller says "the course

disappeared when I changed the item to a drink", that is the reason, and it is expected

behaviour rather than a bug.**

On a support call

If someone reports that a Cafe, Bar or Kiosk printer is not printing automatically, ask

first whether the order carried a course. If it did not, the printer is behaving

correctly. Do not change the control from Orders with Courses Only to Always Print

to make tickets appear. That would put a ticket on the counter for every beer poured,

which is the behaviour the venue configured its way out of.

4. Other traps

Trap 1: "X- No Printing" is load-bearing. Do not delete it.

Ice Cream Tills links exactly one printer: a record called X- No Printing, pointing at

device ID dines-000000, which is not a real printer, with Print On Accept set to

None.

It exists to stop printing, not to print. If someone deletes it because it looks like

junk, Ice Cream Tills is left with zero linked printers, and step 1 of the routing chain

then sends every ice cream order to every active printer at the venue. The Bar, the

Cafe and the Kiosk would all start printing ice cream tickets.

**If a caller wants to stop this till printing, it is already stopped. Leave the record

alone.** If they want it to start printing, link a real printer to the slot category

rather than editing the dummy.

Trap 2: one prep station serves two collection points, from a printer in a third place

Cafe - Hot Drinks (MO) is linked to both foyer collection points, and it prints on the

Cafe device. So a hot drink ordered on a phone for the Circle foyer prints in the Cafe,

not at the Circle. That is intended, because the Cafe makes the drinks. It looks wrong on

the dashboard if you are reading down the slot category list.

Trap 3: the ticket header names the printer, not the prep station

A prep station ticket carries the cloud printer's name in its header. Staff looking at

a ticket that says "Cafe - Hot Drinks (MO)" are reading the printer name. They will not

find a prep station called that; the station is called "Hot Drinks Only".

Trap 4: the prep station cannot be deleted while a printer names it

Dines refuses the delete and shows only "Error Deleting Prep Station", with no

explanation. To delete "Hot Drinks Only", first change Cafe - Hot Drinks (MO) to a

different printer type, or delete that printer record.

Related: Prep Station disappears from the Cloud Printer Type list entirely when a venue

has no prep stations. If a caller says the option is missing, that is why.

Trap 5: renaming a menu item changes what prints on the ticket

Both internal-name flags are off on all ten printers. Tickets show the customer-facing

item name. If someone renames an item on the menu, the kitchen and bar tickets change too.

Setting an Internal Name has no effect here until someone switches the flag on for the

printer.

5. If you are asked to change something

Request

Check first

Add a hot drink

Put it in the Hot Drinks category and it reaches the Cafe prep printer automatically. Putting it anywhere else means it will not.

Add any other new item

No cloud printer here reads item type, so it will print on the All Items printers for whatever counter sells it. Nothing to configure.

"Stop the ice cream till printing"

Already done. See trap 1. Do not delete X- No Printing.

"Make the ice cream till print"

Link a real printer to the Ice Cream Tills slot category. Do not repurpose the dummy record.

"A printer stopped working"

Ask whether the order carried a course (section 3). Then check Print On Accept matches the order flow. Then ask whether the printer is a cloud printer at all, or plugged into the till (section 0).

"It prints sometimes"

Someone may be printing by hand. Manual prints ignore all routing rules.

Move a slot to another slot category

The slot changes which printers it can reach. Check the destination category's printers first.

Create a new slot category

It starts with no printers linked, which means orders on it print everywhere. Link printers immediately.

Delete a printer record

Check whether it is the only printer on a slot category. If it is, that category falls through to printing everywhere.

Change a printer from "Orders with Courses Only" to "Always Print"

Ask why first. At this venue it would put a ticket on the counter for every drink poured. See section 3.

"Add a new collection point"

Copy the pattern of the two foyer points: one All Items printer for the collection ticket, plus Cafe - Hot Drinks (MO) if hot drinks should be made in the Cafe. Both on Mobile Ordering Only.

6. Confidence

Read directly from the warehouse, no interpretation: every printer name, device code,

active flag, Print On Accept value, courses flag, prep station link, slot category link,

slot count, menu item and item type in this file.

Verified against the Dines codebase, in the knowledge base records: the seven-step

routing chain and its order; the fallback to every active printer; what each printer type

puts on a ticket; that a prep station printer is filtered last and cannot be dropped by

the item-type tests; that the ticket header carries the printer name; the delete refusal;

the four Print On Accept values; that changing an item's type away from Food clears its

default Course field; that a local printer cannot serve a prep station.

Supplied by Tom George, 2026-09-12: the reason a theatre runs coursing with no default

courses; that manual printing lets any user send any order to any printer profile

regardless of type or location; that local printers exist at many venues and are invisible

to any central query.

Read off the dashboard, 2026-09-12: the complete Cloud Printer Type mapping and the

complete Print On Accept mapping, taken from the dropdown options on a printer edit screen

at VID 68, a test venue. Nothing at Marina was opened and nothing was saved anywhere. Six

printers at VID 68 were checked, three stored as 0 and three stored as 4. All three of the

first showed Front of House, which is independently confirmed from code and so acts as

the control; all three of the second showed All Items. There is no longer an inferred

value anywhere in this file.

Corrected in revision 3: revision 2 named the coursing control

"Only Print when Order has Courses". The control on the printer edit screen reads

Always Print or Orders with Courses Only. Both wordings appear in Dines material,

so a support representative may hear either; the second pair is what is on the screen.

Revision 2 also carried All Items as an inferred label. It is now confirmed.

Corrected in revision 2: revision 1 said that because a non-Food item type clears the

Course field, drinks could not be coursed, and treated the coursing gate at the bar as a

misconfiguration. Both were wrong. The cleared field is the item's default course on

the menu form. A server can course any line, drinks included, when taking the order, and

that is exactly how this venue works. Revision 1 also left the manual print path open as

unverified; it is resolved above.
