Adding Your Menu: The Basics
You've created your Dines account. Now it's time to add your menu so you can use everything Dines has to offer.
This guide walks through the basics of creating your menu on Dines. More in-depth guides on individual features are also available in the Knowledge Base.
Everything you need to build your menu is in the Inventory section of the Dines app. On desktop, find it in the toolbar on the left-hand side. On iOS, go to Admin > Manage Inventory.

Creating a Category
Head to the Categories section on the top toolbar.
Click "New Category". This opens the Category Details box.
Set the Visibility of the category. Leave this as "Enabled" if you want to display the category right away.
Set the category's rank. This determines where the category appears on your EPOS.
Choose where to Display your Category: EPOS only, Mobile Ordering only, or Both.
Set Display Times if you only want the category to show at certain times. Select your Day, then the From and Until times.
Save the category once you've finished setting it up.
Once all of your categories have been created, they'll appear on your EPOS.
Creating Items
Navigate to your category, then click "Menu Items" at the top toolbar.
Click "New Item".
A pop-up appears asking for the item's details: Name, Item Type (Food, Drink or Other), and Price. Enter the price as a number only, for example "7" rather than "£7". You can also set an Additional Category and a Modifier Set here if needed.
To create an item with a custom price, set its Price to "0" when creating it. Then click on the item you've created, go to Pricing and Promotions, and toggle on "Custom Amounts". Save the item.
Creating Modifier Sets & Modifiers
A Modifier Set is a container you create first. You then add individual Modifiers inside it. More than one Modifier Set can be attached to a single item, for example a Cheeseburger could carry both an "Extra Ingredients" set and a "Sides" set.
From your Item, go to the Modifier Sets tab and click "New Modifier Set".
A pop-up asks for a unique name and a function type.
Function type | Use it for |
|---|---|
Single Selection | Choices where only one option applies, for example a "Size" modifier set for draught beer with Pint, Half-Pint, or 2/3rds options. |
Multiple Selection | Choices where more than one option can apply, for example an "Extra Ingredients" modifier set for a Cheeseburger. |
Click the Modifier Set you've just created, go to the Modifiers tab, and click "New Modifier".
A pop-up asks for the modifier's Name (what appears on EPOS and Mobile Ordering), Internal Name (for internal use only), and Price. The price adjusts the item's price, for example "0.5" to charge an extra 50p for "Extra Cheese".
Click "Save Modifier", or "Save & Create Another" to keep adding modifiers to the same set.
Once you've finished adding modifiers, the modifier set will appear on your EPOS.
